Meet Dr. Musgrave
Dr. Mark Musgrave grew up in Rochester, New York and moved to Delaware in 1978. He received his B.A. degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating with Magna cum Laude honors and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 1984. While at Ohio Wesleyan, he was a member of the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra, Phi Society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary, and the nationally ranked soccer team. Other highlights of Dr. Musgrave’s college experience include being selected for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and receiving the Laureate Award for Expository Writing.
Dr. Musgrave graduated from the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry in 1988, which is one of the highest ranked dental schools in the country. On the National Dental Board Examinations, he scored in the top 10% in the nation.
Following graduation, Dr. Musgrave completed a one year Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) residency at Eastman Dental Center and Strong Memorial Hospital. This TMJ residency program is one of the few in the country, and has made great contributions through extensive research utilizing diagnostic imaging procedures such as computed tomography (CT), arthrography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Dr. Musgrave has spoken to various local as well as international groups concerning diagnosis and treatment of TMJ and facial pain, and has published in the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, and Oral Pathology on a MRI technique to enhance the viewing of the temporomandibular joint.
In 1992, Dr. Musgrave graduated from Eastman Dental Center’s Department of Orthodontics at the University of Rochester. Eastman Dental Center is internationally recognized as a highly respected research and clinically oriented center for the treatment of orthodontic and craniofacial growth disorders.
Dr. Musgrave is a second generation orthodontist. His father, the late Dr. Karl Musgrave, was the Assistant Chairman of Orthodontics at Eastman Dental Center for eight years and later became Chairman of Orthodontics at The Ohio State University. He began the Delaware orthodontic practice in 1984. Dr. Mark Musgrave practiced with his father for over twelve years.
As a result of the close association with his father, Dr. Musgrave gained a keen insight into orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. In fact, many patients who were told by other orthodontic professionals that their case would require complicated and costly "surgical-orthodontic" treatment, have been successfully treated with orthodontics alone (no surgery) by Dr. Musgrave.
In 2003, Dr. Musgrave became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a designation beyond orthodontic certification that is accomplished by the completion of written and oral examinations, as well as through the successful presentation of ten, well-treated orthodontic cases as judged by a committee composed of other board certified orthodontists. Although a board certified orthodontist cannot say he is better than a non-board certified orthodontist, it can be said that not every orthodontist has put in the time, effort, and has developed the skill to be recognized as a board certified orthodontist.
Dr. Musgrave has a reputation for doing what is right and in the best interests of the patient. He is constantly searching for better ways to improve a patient’s orthodontic experience by continually reviewing the orthodontic literature and frequently attending orthodontic seminars. Dr. Musgrave really enjoys the positive responses of patients as beautiful changes occur in their dental appearance and of his TMJ patients as they experience relief from their painful symptoms as treatment progresses.
The Musgrave orthodontic practice has provided people in the Delaware, Marion, and surrounding counties with pleasing smiles for over 25 years and is a fixture in these communities. Dr. Musgrave’s involvement in youth activities has included coaching soccer and making personalized mouth guards for area students participating in various sports. His present interests outside the office include playing piano, skiing, fishing, weight lifting, and attending his children’s activities. He and his wife, Chris, an elementary music teacher, have two children, Connor and Grace.
